App Store Marketing Weekly – Week 13 (2026)

Verification and review rules are becoming growth levers. This week: Android’s ‘advanced flow’ for unverified sideloading, and App Review guideline clarifications that can break launches if you miss them.

Summary

This week’s theme: platform safeguards are now part of your funnel.

Two high-signal updates that are easy to ignore until they create friction:

  • Android’s new “advanced flow” is designed to slow down coerced sideloading from unverified developers (it includes a one-day waiting period). If your acquisition includes any off-Play distribution, this is a real conversion surface.
  • Apple clarified several App Review Guidelines areas (age-gating for creator apps, brand misuse in icons/names, and disclosure requirements when sharing data with third-party AI). These are the kind of “small policy lines” that cause last-minute rejections.

Why this matters

App store marketing is not only ASO and bids anymore. It is also:

  • how reliably users can install and open your app, and
  • whether your metadata, creative, and in-app flows match platform rules.

When platforms add safeguards, they are effectively adding new “steps” to parts of the journey you might not measure (direct installs, enterprise distribution, creator content controls). If you do not instrument and own those steps, you get blindsided by drops that look like “marketing” but are really product and policy.

What to do this week (tiny wins)

  1. Write down your distribution map (seriously): Play, website APK, third-party stores, enterprise, test tracks. Who uses what, and why.

  2. If you have any off-Play install flows, run a 30-minute “fresh device” test:

  • click to download
  • system warning screens
  • waiting periods or re-auth
  • first open
  1. For iOS, scan your app name/icon and any user-generated content surfaces:
  • Are you using another brand’s name in the icon/name without explicit permission?
  • If you let users create/share content, do you have a clear age-gating story that matches your age rating?
  • If you share personal data with third-party AI, is the disclosure explicit and the permission step unambiguous?
