What Apple is introducing (Japan)
To comply with Japan’s Mobile Software Competition Act (MSCA), Apple says that beginning with iOS 26.2 developers can (in Japan):
- distribute apps via alternative app marketplaces
- operate alternative marketplaces
- process app payments for digital goods/services outside Apple IAP
Security + compliance context
Apple emphasizes these options introduce new risk vectors (malware, fraud, scams, privacy risks) and says it’s adding protections including:
- Notarization for iOS apps
- authorization processes for marketplaces
- requirements aimed at protecting minors
Key deadline
Apple notes that by March 17, 2026, Apple Developer Program members must agree to the updated license terms that enable these options in Japan.
Why this matters for ASO / growth
If distribution paths fragment, marketing fundamentals get harder:
- multiple storefronts / listing surfaces
- different conversion flows and trust signals
- measurement fragmentation
Teams operating in Japan should treat this like a channel expansion project (not just legal/engineering).
