ConsultMyApp: For Apple Ads share of voice, the top 2 ads are not the market (track the top 50)
ConsultMyApp argues that ‘screenshot-level’ Apple Ads monitoring (just the visible 1-2 ads) systematically misreads competitive pressure. Their case is simple: the auction stack is dynamic, lower positions can still deliver impressions, and pushing the unseen tail onto the visible leaders overstates who is really winning.

The headline
If your Apple Ads SoV tool only sees the ads that happened to be visible, it is measuring screen presence, not market share.
Their core point is pragmatic: Apple’s Search Results ads can show at the top or further down the page, and the order depends on relevance and bid. Because the auction stack moves, apps outside the visible head can still surface and take a slice of impressions.
What a “top 2 only” view gets wrong
ConsultMyApp’s argument is not that positions 1-2 do not matter (they model them as most of the impression share). It is that:
- Treating the visible ads as 100% of the market overstates the leaders.
- It hides fragmentation (who else is in the fight) until it is too late.
- It delays detection of competitor moves (an app can climb from rank ~30 to ~6 before it shows reliably in screenshots).
Why the top 50 is the practical cut-off
They propose tracking at least the top 50 auction positions as the point where you capture the meaningful competitive tail without pretending you can precisely model everything at rank 97.
Even if the impression share per rank drops fast, “tiny is not zero” is the operational insight: if you want early warning signals, you need to see below the visible line.
Tiny win
Pick 20 keywords that you actually budget against, then:
- Ask your current monitoring setup, how many unique advertisers appear in a week.
- If the answer is “basically 2”, you are probably looking at screenshots.
- Switch to an output that includes (or approximates) positions 1-50, then watch for new entrants climbing into the teens before they hit the top.
