Customer.io Summer 2026 release: geofencing, Live Activities, a notification inbox, and a real preference center
A credited summary of Customer.io’s Summer 2026 release webinar + Q&A. The theme is ‘messaging as infrastructure’: location triggers, lock screen updates, inboxes, and channel preference management becoming table stakes.
Customer.io’s Summer 2026 release is a good snapshot of where lifecycle is going: less “send more push”, more context + preferences + durable surfaces (inboxes, lock screens, location triggers).

What shipped (high signal)
- Geofencing (native, no third-party location tool required): trigger journeys when users enter/exit real-world locations.
- Live Notifications (iOS Live Activities + Android Live Updates): persistent, real-time lock screen updates.
- Notification inbox: a durable place for messages users can revisit.
- Omnichannel subscription center: one place to manage preferences across channels and topics.
- Tooltips: on-product guidance without a full in-app message.
- BYO SMS provider and WhatsApp template management improvements.
- Multiple apps per workspace: run push for more than one app from one workspace.
Practical takeaways
- Location and lock screen are “power surfaces”, but permissions are the price. If you cannot explain value and earn consent, these features just add complexity.
- An inbox changes how you think about push. If users can find the message later, you can stop over-optimizing for “open rate now”.
- Preference centers are becoming non-optional. The more channels you add, the more you need explicit topic-level controls to prevent churn and spam complaints.
Tiny win (20 minutes)
Draw a one-page “messaging contract” for your app:
- what each channel is for (push, in-app, email, inbox),
- your default frequency caps,
- and the 3 preference toggles you wish you had today.
